FAQ'S?

How is Music Influenced by Culture?

As stated earlier, culture is the views and ideals of a country. Music is often the expression of idea, opinion, or emotion. Therefore the culture's ideas or views is almost always represented in the lyrics or style of their music. Music is very malleable and is affected by a countless number of factors. However, these factors put together equal the culture. For example; a culture that values money and material objects will present this through music by the glorification of these items. Ultimately, music is the expression of culture.

Based in the Philippines. Teddy, as he is popularly known, belongs to the Tuwali tribe of Ifugao and the Gaddang Tribe of Nueva Vizcaya provinces in Northern Philippines. He has been Mayor of Kiangan (1995-2000) and Governor of Ifugao (2001-2004; 2007-2010). Since 2010, he has been Congressman for the lone district of Ifugao, championing the cause of all indigenous peoples in the Philippines. From 2010 to 2013, he was chairman of the Philippine Congress’s Committee on National Cultural Communities and, from 2013 to 2016, Vice Chairperson of the Committee on Indigenous Peoples. Within the House of Representative of the Philippines, Teddy has consistently voted for liberal ideals, e.g. against the re-imposition of the death penalty, to curb police brutalities and to stop the discrimination of marginalized sectors, including indigenous peoples. As a key supporter of human rights, he has promoted free public college and university education, legalized divorce, free Wifi access in all public places, mental health education, maternity leave rights, LGBT rights, indigenous education in all indigenous communities and many other bills focusing on indigenous issues. Among those are a bill designed to specifically protect ICCAs (ICCA Law—currently under reading in the Senate), legislation to preserve the Ifugao Rice Terraces, and a bill for national land use that includes ancestral lands as one of the three main “land domains” in the country. As a Honorary member of the ICCA Consortium for several years, Teddy has been following the work of the ICCA Consortium in the Philippines and spoken at various international conferences on the centrality of ICCAs–territories of life for conserving nature and culture and upholding human rights.

Modern Architecture

Modern architecture, or modernist architecture, was an architectural movement or architectural style based upon new and innovative technologies of construction, particularly the use of glass, steel, and reinforced concrete; the idea that form should follow function (functionalism); an embrace of minimalism; and a rejection of ornament.

Modern architecture emerged at the end of the 19th century from revolutions in technology, engineering, and building materials, and from a desire to break away from historical architectural styles and to invent something that was purely functional and new.

Festivals

Two Ifugao towns celebrate prosperity, bountiful harvest
by Daniel B. Codamon / PIA

LAMUT, Ifugao – April has ushered the festival season in the province with two municipalities having recently celebrated their annual town fiestas.

The Rambakan ti Lamut was celebrated from April 5 to 8 while the Keleng di Tinek of Tinoc was held from April 11 to 13. These events gathered officials, visitors, and Ifugaos to celebrate their culture, their blessings, and their unity.

Rambakan means a time to celebrate and commemorate a successful year of prosperity. People participate in activities such as the parade and float parade, ethnic games, dances, sports, beauty and talent competitions, fire drill Olympics, cultural presentations, battle of the bands, and agro-industrial fair. It was capped by a motocross competition at the municipal sports complex.

The activities opened with a program last April 5 after the parade with DILG Cordillera Director John Castañeda as guest speaker. He said the municipality has been a beneficiary of the numerous programs of the DILG such as the Kalsada, Salintubig, Pamana, and Bottom-Up Budgeting projects of the national government that helped accelerated its growth and prosperity.

Lamut people say the celebration is a way of gauging the pace of development under Mayor Mariano Buyagawan Jr., who is finishing his first term but had already accomplished many great things for the municipality.

Keleng, on the other hand, started its celebration last April 11 with a grand parade and opening program graced by Ifugao Rep. Teddy Baguilat Jr.

Competitions on cultural dances, songs, vegetable and culinary arts, and ethnic games were held.

In the olden times, the keleng is considered an offering to the god of the Kalanguya tribe of Tinoc, Kabunyan, who helped them obtain bountiful harvest and long life.

The story had it that the Kalanguya people believed that they emanated from their creator Kabunyan, who was a super being and had nourished their beliefs, customs and traditions.

New Kalanguya couples start with the keleng after hard work with the elders, who usually keep and supply them with mother breeding animals. When the animals multiplied, the old folk advise the new couple to offer at least three fat, spotless, and castrated pigs as offering to Kabunyan so that they will be bestowed with bountiful livestock, harvest, and long and healthy life.

❁ Coat of arms of the Philippines - National coat of arms of the Philippines
The 1941 coat of arms was short-lived and the 1938 iteration of the symbol was restored. Both symbols were also used as a presidential symbol through executive orders. During the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos, Isang Bansa, Isang Diwa (One Nation, One Spirit) became the national motto of the Philippines. It was immediately incorporated into the national seal, replacing the words Republic of the Philippines, which were originally inscribed in a scroll beneath the arms. The decree for this purpose was approved by the Office of the President on June 9, 1978. The words Isang Bansa, Isang Diwa were replaced with a Filipino translation of the original words, Republika ng Pilipinas, pursuant to Republic Act No. 8491.
